St Kilda is an inner suburb of the metropolitan area of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 6 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District. Its local government area is the City of Port Phillip
St Kilda is home to many of Melbourne's visitor attractions including Luna Park, the Esplanade Hotel, Acland Street and Fitzroy Street. It is home to St Kilda Beach, several theatres and many of Melbourne's big events and festivals.
Carlisle Street is the hub of the alternative community in St Kilda, and it has a distinctive arty community and a large part of Melbourne cafe culture hangs out in this eclectic area. The famous Red Stitch Theatre has its home in the suburb where Chapel and Dandenong Streets intersect. It is a professional theatre company and has regular seasonal performances open to the public.
St Kilda has an unmistakable holiday fizz in the air. There’s still a dash of grunge to be found in the shadows but life in St Kilda really is one of urban bayside relaxation. Pick up artisan cheeses at the farmers market, go cycling along the esplanade or take a swim at St Kilda Sea Baths. Get friends together for sunset drinks at the iconic Esplanade Hotel or take a cinematic step back in time at the Astor, a beloved Deco picture palace.
Tourists flock to cafe-laden Acland St on the weekends but East St Kilda’s Carlisle St has a more day-to-day atmosphere, with bagel bakeries nestling next to supermarkets. The broad boulevard of Fitzroy St may have hatted restaurants but still retains the ragged edges of St Kilda’s past. Serviced by a light rail, two tram lines and a handy bus, it’s easy to get in and out of St Kilda in most directions. And remember, if you live in St Kilda, you’re never too old for a twirl on the Ferris Wheel, especially at sunset.
St Kilda is home to many major annual events. The largest of these is the St Kilda Festival. Hailed as Australia's Largest Free Music Festival the one-day event features live music, dance performances, community activities, carnival rides, street performances, market and food stalls, and a dedicated children's area. Since the first St Kilda Festival in 1980 the event has grown in scale and now attracts over half a million visitors each year.
St Kilda also hosts the annual gay Pride March, which starts at Lakeside Drive and heads down Fitzroy Street to the Catani Gardens. The St Kilda Short Film Festival is Australia's longest running short film festival and has been showcasing Australian short films since 1983. The week-long event kicks off with a star-studded Opening Night at St Kilda's Palais Theatre each year. St Kilda is also home to the many venues of the Melbourne Underground Film Festival.
St Kilda has run Melbourne's first major arts and crafts market which has been run on the Esplanade every Sunday since the 1980s. It has been rivalled in Melbourne in recent years by the Southbank art and craft market on Southbank promenade.
